I got to work on Steve's new 10' S-Deck BOSS style long board (deck pictures to come soon) with 1/2 inch redwood stringer. I got the stringer from a friend of mine, Matt Yager that I used to help mill wood and work on his property. He has a lot of old growth redwood stock piled and his company is all set up to sell and ship it to those that need some good lumber. Matt asked me to take some pictures of the board and stringer for his website that will be featuring a custom stringer material section. 6' Redwood Deck Simster

This is the board that didn't make it to the art show. It is inspired by the board that Richard Kenvin is designing that he calls the simster. The jet tail is inspired by the work of Daniel Thompson and I made a set of twinzer fins for it. White resin tint bottom, 1/8 inch salvaged old growth redwood deck and hand made salvaged old growth redwood fins. This board is really special and is currently curing, unridden and on display in our house. Low nose rocker, very little tail rocker, single concave entry to vee out the tail 6' x 20" x 3" with an 18" nose this board should be fast and floaty. Let me know if anyone is interested. Jake

Justin Got his Fish

We finally got Justin's fish down to him in Venice beach. We kept waiting for a time when we could meet up and get a surf together but the time came when we had a ride for the board heading south and we jumped on it. Justin was stoked and couldn't wait to get the board in the water. This one is 6'10" x 22 1/2" x 3". Jake

The Showing of Art North Coast Style

The bookstore was rocking last night with people, music and of course, art. Derek from Fotomendo (the proud owner of the 10'6" Picker) swung by to see the board and take some pictures. Check out his tale from the night here and be sure to look at everything else that is going on at Fotomendo as well. The board in the pictures is
5'1" x 20 1/4 x 2 1/4 and has salvaged redwood fins. I used a block of resin from the bucket we pour excess resin into and a resin art piece as a display. Leslie (Fatty) has a lot of resin tints into those to pieces, beautiful colors, shes the master. The board with the old growth redwood deck didn't make it to the open because it wasn't quite finished in time. It will be finished in the next day or so and I will get pictures of it and more of the 5'1'' up soon. Thanks to everyone who stopped by last night. Jake

Choking Oldgrowth and Kustom Glu

This board needed something special so I called a good friend that had just the thing for it. I knew my friend would have what this board needed because I used to work for him when I was in high school. One of the things we would do was go down the steep hills that are on his property and find old redwood logs that were left behind the last time it was logged 100 or so years before. Back then if they dropped a tree and the log fell into a tight spot they would just leave it and go to the next tree. There was plenty of redwood and it was all choice first growth. When we found a log that had been left my job was to run choker cables down the hill to the log and once it was hooked up we would drag the log up the hill and mill it into lumber. Now, I am pretty sure that all the wood that I helped mill has all ready been sold but there is a slight possibility that I helped drag the tree that this stringer came from out of the woods. That job sure was fun and so is gluing up a blank with a beautiful half inch old growth redwood stringer.

This board is another addition to the library that Jamie shaped and I glassed. Four Fins and a Tail Block

I have been making some fins out of these really beautiful pieces of old growth redwood that I have saved over the years. This tail block has been kicking around the shop for a while and I am not sure who made it but it looks like a Paul Kraus creation. He is the master at beautiful glue-ups, combining redwood and balsa for tail blocks, nose blocks and T-bands. These were all sitting on the table together the other day and they looked great so I snapped a picture. Jake

Blueberry Research

My buddy Matt lives in Maine where there is no surf, and the local surfers like to make sure you remember, that even if there was surf you probably wouldn't be able to find it. Matt is getting his masters and doing research that involves blueberries which makes him a local hero. Some of his "blueberry research" takes place near the ocean and even though there is not any surf Matt needed a board to throw in the passenger seat of his car, just in case he stumbles upon some empty perfection. 5'10" x 20 x 2 1/2 squash tail Avocado with a blueberry resin tint stripe. Ernie Shaped It, I Glassed It

We headed south today to drop off a 7'8" I just glassed for Ernie and get a little surf. It was a beautiful sunny 10@13 and Ernie was stoked on his board. I love surf movies especially when they have something to do with board building. There is a new video out and available for download that fits the bill. Manufacturing stoke is a surf video about the sustainability, or lack there of in the surfboard industry. It features guys like Danny Hess and the Marko Foam Crew. I have been doing some experimenting with Plant based resins and recycled foams as well and am pretty stoked on the results. While I finish sanded and polished the player this evening my wife was busy in the kitchen canning some apple butter (which I love almost as much as making surfboards). It was a productive autumn evening preparing for the time change an getting ready to hunker down for winter. Tomorrow we are headed down south to meet Christian and deliver "The Player". We might even catch a bit of the contest in Ocean Beach if it is on, but we are definitely going to be picking up some blanks for a few Christmas time boards. Hand Carved Surf History

One of our friends is renting a cabin from us, Josiah works at a store called re-find where they buy things from estate sales and stuff then fix it up and resale them. He is also the proud owner of this JNS Swedish fish. The other day he gave us an awesome present. It is a framed history of hand carved surfboards his bosses found at an estate sale and when Josiah saw it he thought we needed it in the house. Da Koop

Finished Justin 6'10'' Fish and snapped these pictures in front of the chicken coop. Leslie had a sign on the Coop that says "Da Koop" you can see it in one of the pictures behind the board. While I was over taking these pictures I noticed that Da Koop needed some attention so I cleaned it out good and fixed it up a bit. Sweet fish, happy chickens, good weekend!

Christians Micro Longboard (The Player)

Christian enjoys surfing the best waves the central coast has to offer, unfortunately there are those days that are sub par. That is were Christians new seven foot micro longboard that he has dubbed "The Player" will come in handy. It will give that little extra float needed to get down the line when its smaller. The Player has a split personality and will also be able to step up to the plate on those bigger days when he could use a little extra paddle power. A good all around board for conditions that are not quite right for a standard shortboard. In these pictures I have cut out the outline and skinned the blank. I still have a lot of shaping to do but I wanted to keep everyone posted on the progress.

Glassed a Neptune For Woody

I am stoke with how this one came out. This 6'5"was shaped by the guys at Neptune/Nor Cal surfshop in Pacific for local charger Woody. I got to coat it in resin and cloth then finish it off with some sanding. Glassed for the North Coast it will spend the rest of it's life riding cold, lonely, waves North of North and loving it. A great journey came to an end today as I watched Derek paddle out on his new Noserider and hook into a couple beauties. I left the beach after seeing a few waves and got a call from Derek three hours later explaining that he had just gotten out of the water and telling me how much fun he had on his new board. It has been great to document the build of this board with Derek and hopefully we will be putting the whole narrative together soon. My part in the story of this board is over but the stories that this board will make are just beginning. Thanks again Derek, enjoy the ride. Jake

Early Winter Sanding

It seems winter has started early up here on the North Coast, wind rain, trees down. What month is it? Well I took this rainy opportunity to do some sanding and as it turns out last weekend I had some time and I built a special room for just that purpose. Avacado Ride Report

I took the family down to the beach to watch "The Avocado's" maiden voyage. We got cinnamon rolls and coffee in Mendo and then walked down to the beach to watch Teddy work his magic. The waves weren't great but Teddy made it look good and the board seemed to ride pretty well. This last week Teddy has been riding the avocado all up and down the California coast, he has been really stoked on it and has been giving me some great feedback. A wave from Teddo. Jake

Airbrush Day

Derek came over to watch one of the final steps in the journey of his 10'6" noserider that he loving refers to as "the nosepicker". It was airbrush day and as always he got some great pictures which can be found at Derek Magdalik Photography. He has also been writing a series of narratives to accompany the pictures that he has been taking of the building of the nosepicker. There is a line in this last narrative that I hope I can live up to, here it is "A blend of good, old fashioned work ethic, real family values, attention to detail, and supplemented with a sense of humor is, quite simply, Jake’s style" It is an honor to be viewed this way and I hope that I always operate with such a style. Avacado Season

This is the Avocado, it is 5'6"x 19 1/2x 2 1/2 with a single concave to a spiral vee off the tail. It was grown in a side lit, blue room with reggae playing in the background in between the sound of power tools whining. The Avocado is the product of Ted Flaig (of Neto fame) and myself combining design elements from three of his favorite boards. Teddy got in on the shaping fun as well and together we brought the avocado to it's ripened state. This avocado will be thoroughly put to the test as Teddy is one of, if not the best surfer on the north coast. He will ride it in everything from knee slappers to overhead barrels, I can't wait to get his feed back on how the thing goes. It's avocado season here at JNS boards so make sure to get yours today. Scrap Resin

Once you kick a batch of resin whatever you don't use is gone, it's going to harden. So what do you do with it? (I am open to suggestions) Leslie started pouring it on a wall covered in wax paper to make the crazy art seen in the third picture. I keep adding to it and it's coming along nicely. In the first couple pictures you can see what happens when we pour the scrap into a bucket of water. All those awesome colors in there remind me of good times spent learning this sticky art/craft from Leslie.

Big Fish For Justin

Justin builds houses and lives on a secluded beach in Southern California (Venice, anything but secluded). Justin is a big guy that is used to riding even bigger surfboards at secrets spots like Malibu. He is a long time family friend and we stared talking about surfing and surfboards which led to talk of fishes. Justin was stoked on the idea of a shorter board that still had the float and stability that he was used to. This is what materialized from that conversation, a 6'10" x 22 1/2" x 3" fish for all those solo sessions in LA County. Jake

Surfboard Reconstruction

Tex is the head wine maker at a prestigious winery in the beautiful Anderson Valley. This is Tex's surfboard which he will be riding when he is not fermenting grape juice. The deck on this board was badly de-laminated so I had to take the deck off inlay some new foam to replace the flaky old foam and then re-glass the deck. Tex wanted to see the process so I took some pictures for him and here they are. Jake

FATTY FIBERGLASS

There has been lots of work going on at JNS Boards, as many of you know I have taken Fatty Fiberglass over from Leslie Anderson. I am happy to say that I glass like a girl, I have been apprenticing with Leslie for the past couple of years and she has been a great teacher. She moved up north (about as far north as possible in the united states) and is stoked on her new life. I am honored that she would pass her business on to me and excited to continue it in Fatty Tradition. We have moved into her old location out highway 20 which is all set up for production, well almost all set up. I spent the day creating a new shaping bay, my friend Dylan and I moved old surfboards and stacks of wood around for hours until a wall was formed. As you can see from the photo there is foam that needs to be mowed. We will add a little paint and throw up some lights and it will be ready to rock(I thought about leaving the walls red for about five second and then opted against it, red is not the new blue). Fish Stories and a Salt Water Wash

Yesterday I got to go salmon fishing with my pops. It was a beautiful day on the water and I reeled this bad boy in with in seconds of hitting the fishing ground at about 6:30 am. epic

After fishing I went back to the house and worked with Dylan to finish up his board. All polished and pretty. He was so stoked to have it done. We ran down to the beach just before dark to complete the final step in the surfboard building process, the salt water wash. Any day that begins and ends with fish is a good

We had some friends visit about a week ago and they had a sweet new waterproof camera so we took to the ocean and gave it a try. We got some cool videos and some good stills. I really enjoy riding boards that I have made and I learn something new about surfboard design every time I surf. This was a fun little session at our local beach break. I have been doing a lot of sanding lately which is awesome because it means that I am making surfboards. I bought this baby a little while back and it had proven to be a great tool. It has variable speeds, 2 orbital settings and will plug into a shop vac for dust free sanding. What more could you want in a tool? Stay tuned for some glassing pictures. This appeared on swaylocks at the beginning of 2010 and as I was looking at all the people and their boards I saw a familiar face. I was in the middle of all those surfboard shapers, it made my day. I have learned so much from reading swaylocks, it is an invaluable resource. My thanks goes out to those who have contributed to the wealth of information on the site. If you want to find me in the picture I am 3 rows up from the bottom and right in the middle of the row, with a blue shirt on and long hair. The board I am holding was my first EPS/Epoxy board and my wife painted sea turtles on the foam before I glassed it on our screened in porch. We have come a long way. Jake

A Couple Fun Ones

Finished these funboards up yesterday a 7'2" and a 7'3" they are great learning boards but could be ridden at all levels in small to average size surf. They will be available at Lost Surf Shack in Fort Bragg as soon as I can get some glass on them and shine em' up real nice. Jake

Spring Board

Spring is in the air around here, birds a chirping, the wind is blowing out of the north west and boards are getting finished. I completed this one yesterday and It is at the Lost Surf Shack in Fort Bragg if you want to check it out. It has a beautiful cedar stringer and blue and green foam stain bands. In case you are noticing a pattern, I really like blue and green, on the next board maybe i will branch out and put some red on it. If you want one board to catch waves in all conditions then look no further. Jake

Wooden Boards and Warm Water

The Family and I are going to North Carolina in a couple months and in the spirit of that trip I found these pictures. This is me and my friend Matt on the maiden voyage of the wooden boards we built together. There is no feeling quite like surfing a board that shaped yourself but when it is a wooden board that took 80+ hours to build it takes the enjoyment to a whole new level. This was an early morning summer session with some fun little waves. It's great to surf with friends on equipment you made together. I think it's time to make another one. Jake

Sleepless Nights

My buddy Julian came by the shop the other day and he was dying for some pictures of his new Fish (It's the one with the Mexican blanket tint from the earlier post). I did a resin panel on the deck that he was excited to see, so excited in fact that he said he could not sleep because he was thinking about it. Abalone Easter

We had a great weekend. The surf was good the diving was great and having abalone for easter dinner topped it all off. I can't give you any pictures of the surf but here is our dinner a few minutes after it left the water. Truck Full of Ding Repair

The other day Leslie unloaded her garage into the back of my truck. Most of these boards are badly damaged but they will be perfect for honing my ding repair skills. My wife was stoked as well because she wants to get in on the ding repair action as well, not to mention that when the boards are fixed we get to ride them. I love riding different shapes and sizes of boards, I always learn so much. Thanks Les

Glassing With Fatty

I have been spending a bunch of time over at Fatty Fiberglass trying to learn all I can before she is gone. See Fatty met an Alaskan man who has stolen her heart and consequently our glasser is acquiring arctic gear and having big yard sales in anticipation of moving up north. I have been working with Fatty for a year and a half now but time is running out so i have been making time to get over there so i can figure this stuff out before i am on my own. What A Day

Today was one of the first sunny days in mendo land and it was just too nice to work. I got in the bay with one of the High School kids this morning and we finished off his senior project board then I went to the beach with the family. The waves were around waist high with some nice peaks coming through and I got to pull my son around on a boogie board in the river. I surfed my 5'6" Larry Mabile twin keel fish, then we came home built a fire and roasted hot dogs and marshmallows. What a day !

Red Mark Angell Single Fin

I got a chance to show my board to Mark Angell the man who shaped it all those years ago in 1978. He is currently living and shaping in Hawaii. He told me about the design elements that were popular for that time period and that my board was a great example the late 70's. I also got a chance to watch him shape for the shape off and it was great to see him in action. He gave me an appraisal for the board that is pretty substantial so I am pretty stoked with that. I think this board needs a spot on the wall in our house.

JC Sacred Craft

John Carper was amazing to watch. I got to stand at the door of the shaping bay and be a part of him mowing foam and telling stories. He shaped a beautiful Hawaiian single fin gun in two and a half hours during which he told an hour and a half worth of stories and delivered a lifetime of knowledge to the audience. JC used one of the new Accurate Planners designed by Jed Noll and at one point Stretch stepped in and gave it a try as well. This video is of the moment they both gave the planer the thumbs up. Maybe I will have one someday. Sacred Craft is an awesome event.

It was a really great show. More picture and video to come. I love this picture of Wayne Rich using a crazy rail jig for the shape off. It's no wonder he was defending champ. This years shape off winner was Ward Coffey, you should see that guy shape he moves so gracefully and fast, it was truly inspiring. Speaking of fast there are a couple of shots of Bob Pearson in there, that guy moves at the speed of light, he is a great shaper.

Well we are leaving for Sacred Craft in Santa Cruz tomorrow morning and let me say that i may not be able to sleep tonight. I am really stoked to be able to meet and watch all the legends of our craft shape live and in person. Sacred craft is all about our passion as surfers for waves and the equipment that makes it possible to ride them. I will leave you with an image of the board that started my infatuation with surf craft, the first board that i laid a sanding bock on, in the shaping bay of Paul Kraus, my mentor and friend. Angell/Haut 70's shortboard

I will be spending the some time next week getting this board fixed up and ready to bring to Sacred Craft in Santa Cruz next weekend. I found this board in an attic that I was hired to clean and organize when I was in high school. The guy traded me my days work for the board and I took it home, patched it up and rode it. On a surf trip to Santa Cruz, i was riding the board at steamers lane and a guy mentioned that it was a great piece of history so I hung onto it. Eventually it got a little beat up and I stopped riding it but I have been meaning to fix it up for some time now. It is a really beautiful board and the antique roadshow at Sacred Craft has given me an great excuse to finally fix it. This is a 6'8" shaped by Mark Angell under the Haut label, it was shaped in 1978. That's all I know about this board but it will be fun to find out the whole story next weekend. Wife's Quiver

The board on the left is a 6'5 Jimmy Keith board from North Carolina. I shaped the board on the right, it's an 8'0" Mini Longboard with a light blue resin tint, a royal blue pinline and yes that is our sons hand print. It is clear to me from this picture that this girl needs more surfboards but I know someone who can help her with that.

Freshies and Boards in the Works

The boards on the racks at Leslie's are constantly changing as new ones come in and old ones get finished up but one thing remains constant, the boards always point north. These are a few that we have been working on recently. The board on the bottom is my 8 foot mini long board that I will be glassing this next week. I got a couple more board orders while working at Lost Surf Shack this week and i am really excited about getting them started. Stay tuned for progress on those boards, sacred craft moments and restoration of a bright red vintage single fin.

My wife has been sewing up these sweet board socks recently. She even found time to make me one. They are made out of all recycled and re-purposed fabrics. There are two in the 9 foot range at the surf shop that need homes or she can make custom sizes to fit your board. Let me know if anyone is interested.

I shaped this alaia and gave it to my dad this Christmas. Pops is pretty stoked on it. I got this wood from a house I was helping remodel which was built in 1926. Sweet old growth redwood. I made another alaia from wood from the same house that is for sale at Lost Surf Shack in Fort Bragg, Ca. If you want more info on it leave a comment or swing by the shop and check it out.

Senior Fishes

I met a kid named Julian a while back while I was working at Lost Surf Shack. He came in recently talking about his senior project and how what he really want to do was build a surfboard. He was bummed because he didn't think he would be able to. My boss Kris quickly came up with a plan to sponsor him and asked me if i would work with him. This is the start to his fish. Stoked.

New Year and Good Friends

The New year has been good and busy all ready. I have been missing my East Coast friends and I found these pictures that represent good times playing with surfboards. The first picture is of my buddy Sam and the board that I built for him in North Carolina. This board has been surfed up one coast and down the other. Sam wanted to have the fruits of the spirit on his board where he could see them while he surfs, focusing on these guarantees fun in and out of the water.

This is my friend Matt Jones who is currently lost in Maine as you can clearly see he is enjoying being lost. He is riding a fish that we built together while he was living in California. I thought it is cold here but Matt is bundled up to the max for this surf. I think that the trees and rocks in the background are covered in snow. Brrrrr. Well back to shaping.

We drove to the city this morning so my wife and son could go visit grandma and grandpa. As I headed back home I stopped at Ocean Beach and got a good little surf in on my new 6'8" I am really happy with the way it went and I think it will be a great board for the waves up here. I was nearing home I realized how green everything is right now and I wanted to share the greenness. It has been raining non stop for days and all the rain has brought life back to the hills. It's beautiful.

New Boards and New Adventures

I have been busy making boards for Christmas. I helped a good friend shape this fish and then we and got a little crazy with it on a resin swirl. It sure was fun and it turned out pretty cool looking. He left today on a road trip surfing down the California coast and will end up wherever the waves take him. He will certainly be missed.

This board is a little Christmas present for myself. It is 6'8"x19x2 5/8. It will be great when the waves get a little to much for my short board to handle. It has yet to be surfed but I am thinking Christmas morning will be just right.

A Shaping Experience

Yesterday I got together with my buddy Josiah to shape him a fish. He wanted to be a part of the shaping experience so we met at the coffee shop early and then got to work. This is a 6'2" quad fish. The nose is pulled in a little more than a traditional fish and it will make the mediocre days of surf super fun. My two year old son came in to check Dada's work, he said the board looked "pretty nice". Josiah was stoked to be apart of his new board and is ready to have it in the water. Jake
