New Projects With Old Tools

There is some exciting new stuff going on in the shaping bay that involves recycled EPS, reclaimed redwood, and old tools purchased at yard sales. That's all I can tell you for now but there will be more picture coming your way soon. Jake

Chilly Surf at Home

We are back in Northern California and it is great to be home. I got to surf with some of the boys today. There were some fun ones but what a difference in the water from North Carolina, it is a wee bit colder in these parts. I am back in the shop and ready to take care of your surfboard needs so feel free to bring them by. Thanks to everyone for your patience while I was away. Jake

Enjoying the Carolinas

The last couple weeks have been super productive and a little nuts. We got a whole heap of boards fixed, glassed, and back to there owners, then got on a plane bound for North Carolina. We have been enjoying the coastal Carolina island life on Oak Island, NC. We have been fishing, boating, swimming and of course surfing. Here are a couple pictures of the family on island time the boys are having a great time and I even got to body surf with Wesley, he was charging. It has been great to see some of our old friends and I will be seeing more in the coming days. I will be back to work on august third and ready to build some surfboards. Jake

Stoked Teddy

I got Teddy's Neto Grip system (check him out on Facebook Here) dropped in his new Avocado model. I laminated a piece of bandana around the box for strength Teddy did a little rattle can stencil art, ready to shred. Jake

Super Sap on Redwood

I glassed this chambered redwood board that a man named Jason built with Entropy Super Sap Epoxy for added organic material. It sure is beautiful. good job Jason. Jake

Happy 4th

I hope everyone had a fun independence day. Any time that you have this many surfboards on your roof you know it's going to be a good day. Jake

Avocado Squared

This is Teddy's New Avocado. We changed this one up a bit, it's a little narrower with a more pulled in tail and a chopped nose. It is made with a recyclable EPS foam and Entropy's sustainable epoxy system. Glassed with a 6oz bottom and a 6/4 deck with a three quarter 4oz deck patch but with a weight of only 6.2 pounds means performance that will last.

5'5" x 19 1/4 x 2 1/2 Single concave to deep spiral V and five fin boxes for endless possibilities. Jake

"The Dylan"

This board got finished (team effort) and surfed yesterday. Dylan even let me ride it and I had a blast, cheater fives all day. I can't wait to make myself one, it's all about having fun in the ocean and this board is fun. It is 9'1" x 23" x 3" and the outline is a combination of the nose curve of "The Picker" and tail curve of Steve's S-Deck. Dylan has a sandwich named after him at one of the shops in town and I used to order it for lunch all the time when I was working at the surf shop. I think I will name this model "The Dylan" (after the sandwich, of course). Jake 

Enviro Mental Sup

I have been working with Entropy Epoxy Resins recently and I am really stoked on them. I met the guys that invented the system and watched them do a few demos at sacred craft last year. The Resins are made using pine tree sap and other bio materials that are waste products from the bio fuel and wood processing industries. You can check out their website for the full scoop at http://www.entropyresins.com/. I just finished my wife's paddle board and it is made with recyclable foam from Marko Foam and glassed using Entropy's Super Sap resin. We put it in the river the other day and it feels really good, i think we could get the whole family on it. I will be finishing a 5'5" Avocado for Teddy next week built using recyclable foam and Super Sap resin. I will make sure you get to see it when it's done. Jake

Sqaure Nose Teddy

This board is for Teddy, his friend Jay down in Malibu shaped it, and drew the fish. Teddy has been digging the square noses and tails recently so he chopped of the nose and we did a little customizing before I painted and glassed it. I threw in some JNS bottom contour just how Teddy likes, tuned up some things here and there, and took it to the glassing room. Jake

Boat Board 4 Royce

6'2" x 18 3/4 x 2 5/16

I learned to surf with Royce at our local beach break during middle school. We surfed together most days in high school and then we went our separate ways. Royce went down to Santa Barbara to urchin dive which means that he has an excuse to go surf the channel islands which are only accessible by boat. This will be his new boat board for small to medium point waves miles off shore. Jake

Free Form Lam-N-ation

Stub-Nose Picker

Dylan and I had some fun on this one. He helped me shape it up a couple days ago on his birthday and then we got into some tint this morning and this is what we came up with. No need to tape the stripes, just free form them in during lamination, right. Jake

4 year Old Fisher Man

I got to take my four year old to a stocked trout pond this morning. It was so fun, he slayed 'em. Jake

Polishing, Polisher, Polished

This is my friend Sam's Christmas board, the woodrum fish. He just sent me this picture and it's fitting because I have been thinking a lot about polishing recently. The series of events that have landed me as owner of Fatty Fiberglass all revolve around polishing. The short version of the story is Leslie Anderson hate polishing so she contacted me to see if I wanted to help her. I moved from North Carolina back to my home town in California to polish for Leslie and apprentice to local shaper Paul Kraus. I learned to polish and in no time Les was teaching me the ends and outs of the whole glassing process. Next thing I know she is handing me the keys to the place and I am the owner, crazy. Polishing is not my favorite thing to do but I am glad it is part of the process. Well, I'm off to polish, Jake  

From Fin Panel to Fin

 I used a carbide blade for my multi-tool to cut the fin out of the panel. It worked great a little slow going but great non the less.

wear a respirator for foiling, its dusty. I used a grinder to rough shape the fin and then my Milwaukee sander turned upside down to finish the foiling.

 Finished, now glass it on, hot coat, sand, gloss, polish and ride. This board will get polished tomorrow morning. I am stoked with how it is looking. I will make sure you see the finished product when it is done. Jake

 I had fun with this one. It makes me want to grab a spoon and dig in. Jake

Itchy Time

This fin panel is ready and I get to turn it into a fin, which means that I will spend the next couple days itching and scratching. A couple surfs should take care of the itch and any excuse to surf is a good okay in my book. Jake

Wesley has been fascinated with the camera. He just snaps away and every once in a while he gets a good one.

 

This is a board I made for my wife a couple years ago and that is Wesley's hand print, they grow up quick.
