JC Sacred Craft

John Carper was amazing to watch. I got to stand at the door of the shaping bay and be a part of him mowing foam and telling stories. He shaped a beautiful Hawaiian single fin gun in two and a half hours during which he told an hour and a half worth of stories and delivered a lifetime of knowledge to the audience. JC used one of the new Accurate Planners designed by Jed Noll and at one point Stretch stepped in and gave it a try as well. This video is of the moment they both gave the planer the thumbs up. Maybe I will have one someday. Sacred Craft is an awesome event.

Sacred Craft Part 1

It was a really great show. More picture and video to come. I love this picture of Wayne Rich using a crazy rail jig for the shape off. It's no wonder he was defending champ. This years shape off winner was Ward Coffey, you should see that guy shape he moves so gracefully and fast, it was truly inspiring. Speaking of fast there are a couple of shots of Bob Pearson in there, that guy moves at the speed of light, he is a great shaper.

Off to the Show

Well we are leaving for Sacred Craft in Santa Cruz tomorrow morning and let me say that i may not be able to sleep tonight. I am really stoked to be able to meet and watch all the legends of our craft shape live and in person. Sacred craft is all about our passion as surfers for waves and the equipment that makes it possible to ride them. I will leave you with an image of the board that started my infatuation with surf craft, the first board that i laid a sanding bock on, in the shaping bay of Paul Kraus, my mentor and friend. Angell/Haut 70's shortboard

I will be spending the some time next week getting this board fixed up and ready to bring to Sacred Craft in Santa Cruz next weekend. I found this board in an attic that I was hired to clean and organize when I was in high school. The guy traded me my days work for the board and I took it home, patched it up and rode it. On a surf trip to Santa Cruz,  i was riding the board at steamers lane and a guy mentioned that it was a great piece of history so I hung onto it. Eventually it got a little beat up and I stopped riding it but I have been meaning to fix it up for some time now. It is a really beautiful board and the antique roadshow at Sacred Craft has given me an great excuse to finally fix it. This is a 6'8" shaped by Mark Angell under the Haut label, it was shaped in 1978. That's all I know about this board but it will be fun to find out the whole story next weekend. Wife's Quiver

The board on the left is a 6'5 Jimmy Keith board from North Carolina. I shaped the board on the right, it's an 8'0" Mini Longboard with a light blue resin tint, a royal blue pinline and yes that is our sons hand print. It is clear to me from this picture that this girl needs more surfboards but I know someone who can help her with that.

Freshies and Boards in the Works

The boards on the racks at Leslie's are constantly changing as new ones come in and old ones get finished up but one thing remains constant, the boards always point north. These are a few that we have been working on recently. The board on the bottom is my 8 foot mini long board that I will be glassing this next week. I got a couple more board orders while working at Lost Surf Shack this week and i am really excited about getting them started. Stay tuned for progress on those boards, sacred craft moments and  restoration of a bright red vintage single fin.

Swell Socks

My wife has been sewing up these sweet board socks recently. She even found time to make me one. They are made out of all recycled and re-purposed fabrics. There are two in the 9 foot range at the surf shop that need homes or she can make custom sizes to fit your board. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Old Growth Redwood Alaia

I shaped this alaia and gave it to my dad this Christmas. Pops is pretty stoked on it. I got this wood from a house I was helping remodel which was built in 1926. Sweet old growth redwood. I made another alaia from wood from the same house that is for sale at Lost Surf Shack in Fort Bragg, Ca. If you want more info on it leave a comment or swing by the shop and check it out.

Summer in January

It has been an amazing couple weeks on the North Coast with sunny skies and summer temperatures. I took the family to the skate park and then we headed south to enjoy some scenery.

Senior Fishes

 

I met a kid named Julian a while back while I was working at Lost Surf Shack. He came in recently talking about his senior project and how what he really want to do was build a surfboard. He was bummed because he didn't think he would be able to. My boss Kris quickly came up with a plan to sponsor him and asked me if i would work with him. This is the start to his fish. Stoked.

New Year and Good Friends

 

The New year has been good and busy all ready. I have been missing my East Coast friends and I found these pictures that represent good times playing with surfboards. The first picture is of my buddy Sam and the board that I built for him in North Carolina. This board has been surfed up one coast and down the other. Sam wanted to have the fruits of the spirit on his board where he could see them while he surfs, focusing on these guarantees fun in and out of the water. 

This is my friend Matt Jones who is currently lost in Maine as you can clearly see he is enjoying being lost. He is riding a fish that we built together while he was living in California. I thought it is cold here but Matt is bundled up to the max for this surf. I think that the trees and rocks in the background are covered in snow. Brrrrr. Well back to shaping.

101 South

We drove to the city this morning so my wife and son could go visit grandma and grandpa. As I headed back home I stopped at Ocean Beach and got a good little surf in on my new 6'8" I am really happy with the way it went and I think it will be a great board for the waves up here. I was nearing home I realized how green everything is right now and I wanted to share the greenness. It has been raining non stop for days and all the rain has brought life back to the hills. It's beautiful.

New Boards and New Adventures

I have been busy making boards for Christmas. I helped a good friend shape this fish and then we and got a little crazy with it on a resin swirl. It sure was fun and it turned out pretty cool looking. He left today on a road trip surfing down the California coast and will end up wherever the waves take him. He will certainly be missed.

This board is a little Christmas present for myself. It is 6'8"x19x2 5/8. It will be great when the waves get a little to much for my short board to handle. It has yet to be surfed but I am thinking Christmas morning will be just right.
